The Abundance of Hydrangeas on the Azores Islands
The Azores islands are 9 exotic islands, located in the mid-Atlantic ocean which have a delicate, narrow weather pattern. The islands are known for their unique flora and fauna which extends far past the endemic plants of the island. Introduced here in the 17th century, the hydrangea plant is by far the most recognized symbol of the region.
It is on these islands that you can find countless colors, shapes, and sizes of these beautiful flowers. It is hard to say which island has more hydrangeas as the highways and country roads are lined with these flowers. Here you can see various shades of blue, pink, and white hydrangeas in the spring and summer months when they are in full bloom.
The island of Faial is known as the blue island due to the thousands of blue hydrangeas that blanket the island’s landscape. Hydrangeas are a shade-loving plant that requires moist, fertile, well-drained soil. When grown correctly, the flowers are incredibly blue, which is due to the acid in the soil and the high aluminum content. If you don’t know the pH of your soil, you can still grow hydrangeas, the flowers will simply bloom pink or white (depending on the type of plant) instead of turning blue.
It’s easy to test the pH of your soil if you buy a pH test kit or pH meter. The pH scale ranges from 0 to 14. Acid soils have a pH of 6.5 or less. A pH of 7 is neutral. Alkaline soils have a pH of 7.5 or more. Hydrangeas grow best in soil that has a pH of 5.0 – 5.5. It is possible in the same garden to have various colors of hydrangeas as the pH balance can vary in different areas making these plants a colorful addition to any garden. 
Hydrangeas are very popular in the east coast of the United States and are able to grow in various shades of blue as well. If you go to the Hampton’s, Martha’s Vineyard, or Nantucket you will most likely see these large beautiful plants adorning the countryside homes and town gardens. It is said it was brought to Nantucket from the Azorean fisherman who relocated to the island for better living conditions.
When the ladies were setting sail with their husbands on their transatlantic journey from the Azores to America they brought their prized hydrangea seeds with them, hoping to cultivate the plant in their new homeland of Nantucket. As you can see the flowers are present everywhere in the Azores and especially in Faial and Sao Miguel where every local has the colorful plant growing in their garden. It is illegal to pick the hydrangeas from the public gardens or countryside as they play a crucial role in maintaining the beauty of the roadways for both locals and tourists.
The first thing travelers always inquire about when visiting the Azores is how there are so many hydrangea flowers everywhere and who maintains them? The answer is the towns that the plants are located all have a responsibility in maintaining a certain level of flora along the roadside with locals working at the “Junta” cutting, trimming, and planting these beautiful flowers annually.

I would like to purchase hydrangea seeds from the Azores.
My husband and I visited there once on a cruise. A short stop. Didn’t know about the hydrangea plants to look for them.
My Uncle Bob Luebke (pilot, USAF) crashed in the Azores in the late 1940s and his body was never found. I’d love to visit one day to get further information, if any, on that tragedy and see those beauteous hydrangeas . . . on my bucket list.

I lived on Terceira for 3 years 40 years ago- it was an awesome experience traveling throughout the islands
These are the most pictures. I just cannot imagine how beautiful and fun it would be to get to drive in the islands.

I went to the Azores at the end of August and the blooms were fading on the hydrangeas. I’m thinking June-Sept would be the best time to visit San Miguel Azore Island. These beautiful bushes are everywhere on the islands as stated in the article. I have never seen a more beautiful place than the Azore Islands and am making plans to buy property there. There is no pollution on the islands trash removal is their biggest issue. The first hyway on San Miguel was built in 1984!! So that should tell you how unspoiled these islands are you also see bees!!! Bee hive collapse has not hit these islands yet. The ocean is a spectacular color baring shades of navy to aqua.
I highly recommend going there. It is extremely cheap to vacation there your biggest expense is your flight. We flew out of Boston and it was a 4 hour flight to San Miguel. I do not really like sharing info on the islands because I don’t want it to change and tourist always bring change!

Just discovered one of my great grandmothers was from Terceira, one of the nine islands. I don’t know if I’ll ever get to visit, but I’m trying!
I lived on Terceira Island for 2 years. That is where Lajas Field Air force base is. Don’t know about the other islands but this one was very pretty.

Thanks to the Navy we lived in the Azores for 4 years! It was beautiful but alot has changed and all for the good.
Hi David, I am in Sao Miguel now until July 27. Is there somewhere on the island I can buy hydrangea seeds? Do you know if it is legal to take a hydrangea cutting back to the US? We won’t take any cuttings from the road ways. We will ask the house we are staying in if they will share a cutting. Thank you!

Hello! Currently in Azores and staying with a local host. Upon finding out that hydrangea is my favorite flower, the host gave me a bunch of dried hydrangea blooms from her own garden. Is this then illegal too? Or would I be in trouble to take it through the airport security and onto the plane later on?
